Mitch Benn, The Lehrer Effect
Mitch Benn, The Lehrer Effect
When, years ago, a teenage Mitch discovered American comic songwriting legend Tom Lehrer, the course of his life was changed forever.
Mitch looks at the legacy of the elusive Lehrer, the creative debt he, and all those who mix humour and melody, owe to him and performs some of the more Lehreresque of his own songs. Since Mr. Lehrer placed his entire catalogue in public domain, expect a few Mitch Benn-ified covers of some of Tom’s most famous creations as well.
Tom Lehrer died in July 2025, at the age of 97, and immediately before the premiere of the show in Edinburgh, which means that the show is now a heart-felt eulogy, rather than living tribute to the artist.
This is a show that rests on zero laurels, Benn’s or Lehrer’s. It’s a fast-paced, blend of showmanship and showcasing that is, most importantly, properly entertaining and worthy of its august subject.
If you were a fan of Tom, or for that matter of Mitch, then this is a perfect blend. And if you are unaware of either or both comedy song writers this is the opportunity to become both and have a really enjoyable hour into the process.
